During the campaign “For our drinking water on the go”, 46 individual water supply systems were sampled in the Urfahr-Raum district throughout the previous year and their owners were advised on the structural condition during a local inspection.
70 percent with defects
If you look at the overall evaluation (chemical, bacteriological and structural) of the sampling, only 30 percent of the sampled wells and springs can be classified as flawless; the remaining 70 percent have deficiencies or at least require advice.
Wells dry up
“We see a need for action here for two reasons: On the one hand, the advancing climate crisis also influences the water cycle and thus the water resources. Domestic wells running dry are already a sad consequence here. On the other hand, we know from the analysis results of the laboratory bus that the majority of domestic wells are not in the appropriate structural condition and therefore does not provide perfect drinking water,” says Environment and Climate State Councilor Stefan Kaineder.
Connection not always possible
Of course, a connection to a public water supply is not possible in all cases, but where it is possible and sensible, the state of Upper Austria supports the expansion of joint public supply structures with funding programs. “I advise all Upper Austrians who rely on a domestic well system to make use of the offer offered by the state of Upper Austria. We would also like to draw attention to the fact that constant maintenance of a domestic fountain system is essential if you want to obtain perfect drinking water,” emphasizes Provincial Councilor Stefan Kaineder .
The connection rate to the public water supply in the Urfahr-Raum district is 85 percent. This corresponds exactly to the average value for the whole of Upper Austria.
