Two days following Hamas’ major attack on Israel with hundreds of deaths, blue and white light effects were projected on Monday evening onto the famous sail roofs of the Opera House, the Parliament Building in Canberra and the National Gallery in Melbourne.

At the same time, hundreds of people in Sydney demonstrated their support for Palestine and marched to the opera in anger at the light projections. Many waved the Palestinian flag. Banners read: “Free Palestine” and “We say no to the occupation.”

Israel bombs Gaza Strip

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had previously appealed in vain to participants to cancel the rally out of respect for the numerous deaths in Israel. “Hamas’ actions are inexcusable,” Albanese said.

Hamas killed at least 700 people and injured around 2,400 others in its massive attack on Saturday. More than 100 Israelis were abducted to the Gaza Strip. According to the Ministry of Health there, at least 493 people were killed and more than 2,700 injured in Israeli air strikes in response to the major attack in the Gaza Strip.
