the essential
The 16th edition of the festival was crowned with success last weekend in Seissan, with 12,000 spectators coming from further and further afield to admire an anthology of artists won over by the atmosphere.
It’s barely over that we want more! Concluded in style on Sunday April 30, the eve of a 1is May be opportune following such a burst of energy, the Welcome in Tziganie festival has once once more succeeded in its bet for a weekend in Seissan: transporting the spectators to a unique universe, filled with passion and emotion.
At the time of the dismantling of the tents and the big top which will have smoldered the public and the artists during a sometimes rainy weekend, especially on Saturday, but always festive, the director and founder of the festival draws up a necessarily positive assessment of this 16e intoxicating wine. “There were 12,000 people, with Friday and Saturday evening sold out. Two full evenings in the same edition, it’s the first time that this has happened. We are really very satisfied”, smiles Florian Calvez.
“Some have come from afar”
This year, a majority of festival-goers had opted for the “3-day pass” (nearly two-thirds according to the organization). A tangible marker of the loyalty of an increasingly numerous and internationalized public. “It’s true that each year there are a little more people than in previous years. We saw that there were a little more foreigners than in other years. There are some who have come from afar , especially for Balkan Beat Box”, underlines Florian Calvez.
Throughout its history, Welcome in Tziganie has established itself as a reference in terms of gypsy and gypsy music, while continuing to capture an audience not necessarily initiated, particularly in the Gers. “Locally too, it’s also an event, assures the director of the festival. People like to come, they know that it’s good child, that it plays well, that there is good energy.”
“Everyone was at full speed, even in the stands”
Between the green theater stage, reserved for festival-goers, and the “off” festival open to all, Welcome in Tziganie has managed to find the right balance, while bringing a touch of novelty. For the first time, a restaurant offered Balkan specialties to the public. “It worked well. It’s something we’re going to do once more,” says Florian Calvez.
This joyful atmosphere rubbed off on the performance of the artists, seduced by the atmosphere throughout the three days. The many positive feedback sent to Florian Calvez bears witness to this. “Serbian singer Bojan Sabanovic (Editor’s note: member of Ekrem Mamutovic’s orchestra) said to me: it’s incredible, I’ve never played in front of such an audience, with such excitement”, delivers the director of the festival. The gay lads of Soviet Suprem were also surprised by the attitude of the public: “Generally, there is a good atmosphere at their concert but there, everyone was at full blast, even in the stands”, he continues. The flamenco guitarist and composer Juan Carmona did not expect such passion either. “Usually, he plays in front of rooms with a seated audience. There, at the end of the concert, there was a nice ovation, he mightn’t believe it and was very touched.”
Enough to confirm the organization in its choices for the next fundraiser, already scheduled for April 26, 27 and 28, 2024, while of course waiting for the names of the first headliners. “The formula that there was this year, it was liked and we will try to stay at this dimension,” concludes Florian Calvez. The appointment is made for a new stay in Tziganie.
