DRight-wing extremist Martin Sellner recently asked whether Marine Le Pen wanted to “castrate” the AfD. On his Telegram channel he criticized that “the lady” had stabbed the AfD in the back by calling on its party leader Alice Weidel to distance herself from the concept of remigration. In fact, Le Pen had called for such distancing from Weidel. Sellner, for his part, calls on the AfD not to “submit to Le Pen in a humiliating way.” This presents Weidel with a problem; she is caught between tree and bark.
On the one hand, the AfD needs the Rassemblement National (RN), whose parliamentary group leader Le Pen is in the French National Assembly. The party wants to network more internationally. On the other hand, the influence of the right-wing extremists around the Thuringian state chairman Björn Höcke, who pursue ethnic ideas, is growing in the AfD, and with it the pressure on the party leadership to integrate this wing.
