Edmundo González issued a statement outlining the reasons why he did not appear before the TSJ Electoral Chamber on Wednesday, August 7. The president of the judicial body, Caryslia Rodríguez, summoned the opposition leader for 11:00 am.

“If I go to the Electoral Chamber under these conditions, I will be in absolute vulnerability due to defenselessness and violation of due process, and I will put at risk not only my freedom but, more importantly, the will of the Venezuelan people expressed on July 28, 2024 and the gigantic effort of the Venezuelans who have participated in this process so that we could obtain evidence of the vote validly cast by the citizens,” he wrote in the document published on his X account.

The politician explained that the legal process being carried out by the TSJ does not correspond to any procedure contemplated in the Organic Law of the Supreme Court of Justice or any other law on electoral jurisdiction.

The head of the US Southern Command, General Laura Richardson, said in an interview with the EFE news agency that the solution to the crisis in Venezuela, following the elections of July 28, must be democratic and not military. She insisted that the situation will only be resolved with transparency by publishing the results of the elections.

“I would like to go back to what others have said. Some of our congressional leaders have said that we do not need to resort to a military solution for any of this. This is very simple: democratically publish the results of the vote and show the will of the people,” General Richardson said from Panama.

As head of the Southern Command since 2021, General Richardson is responsible for providing contingency planning, operations and security cooperation in an area covering 31 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, including Venezuela.

Chilean President Gabriel Boric said on Wednesday, August 7, that he has “no doubt” that the Venezuelan government “has attempted to commit fraud” during the presidential elections of July 28, and reiterated that Chile “does not recognize the self-proclaimed victory” of Nicolás Maduro.

“Personally, and this is the position of the Chilean government, I have no doubt that the Maduro regime has tried to commit fraud, otherwise they would have published the famous minutes. Why haven’t they done so? If they had won, they would clearly have shown the minutes,” he said in statements to the press.

He explained that the proof is the reluctance to show the electoral records and insisted that Chile will not make the mistake of recognizing any result without it having been verified by international institutions, in a veiled allusion to the victory that the Venezuelan opposition also claims.
