The action-thriller genre film ‘Weekend in Taipei’ will grace Indonesian cinema screens starting October 16 2024. This is a film made by American director George Huang.

The film stars Luke Evans as John Lawlor and Gwei Lun-Mei as Joey Kwang. As the title suggests, Weekend in Taipei, this film is mostly set in Taipei. Viewers will be shown skyscrapers and buildings with typical Taipei ornaments.

Tells the story of John Lawlor, a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agent from the United States who has a mission to chase down the largest drug cartel in Taiwan. In carrying out his mission, he disguises himself as a buyer and meets Joey Kwang, a tough girl who acts as a courier and driver for Kwang (Sung Kang), the main character of the cartel.

The relationship between Lawlor and Joey turns into romance. However, this relationship ended fifteen years ago. The two were then reunited in Taipei. Many things happened while they were apart which also led to various threats, but it was love that was able to save them from danger.

With a duration of 1 hour 40 minutes, Weekend In Taipei makes excellent use of the time duration. George Huang clearly conveys the whole story, from the past of John Lawlor and Joey Kwang, to their efforts to catch Kwang.

Even though it is an action-thriller genre, Weekend in Taipei is not the typical serious action film, George Huang still inserts a side of humor in each of their action scenes, making it the right dish to unwind and escape for a moment from the routine.

Unfortunately, several parts of the film seem to lack new exploration of action scenes. For example, the fight scene in the restaurant, which is reminiscent of Chinese action films, looks familiar and doesn’t provide anything fresh.

As a Taipei actor, Gwei Lun-Mei’s performance is extraordinary. He was even able to balance the appearance of Evans, who is the world’s top star. Occasionally involved in romantic scenes with Evans, Gwei Lun-Mei’s appearance is very promising, she doesn’t even look awkward acting with the Hollywood star.

This film is suitable for those of you who just want to go to the big screen to spend free time. Weekend in Taipei presents a cinematic experience full of suspense and romance. Could be an interesting choice to watch. (M-3)
