Weekend Exercise: Reducing Cardiovascular Risks & Improving Health – Study Findings and Insights

Not everyone finds time for sport in the hectic everyday life and instead moves more at the weekend. A study shows that you can do this with a clear conscience.

Even weekend exercise reduces the risk of heart attack, heart failure, atrial fibrillation and stroke, in a similar way to exercise spread over several days. This is shown by a new study in the journal “JAMA”. To do this, researchers evaluated fitness tracker data from 89,573 people. These showed that 34 percent were inactive, 42 percent were moderately to vigorously active for at least 150 minutes on one or two days at the weekend, and 24 percent exercised more days of the week. Compared to the inactive, the risk of various diseases was similarly lower in the two active groups.

Heart attack: weekend athletes -27% and regular exercise -35% Heart failure: weekend athletes -38% and regular exercise -36% Atrial fibrillation: weekend athletes -22% and regular exercise -19% Stroke: weekend athletes -21% and with regular exercise -17%

The cardiologist Dr. Patrick T. Ellinor of Massachusetts General Hospital concluded, “Our results support that interventions to increase physical activity can improve cardiovascular health, even when focused on one or two days per week.”
