  • A hailstorm surprised people in Zurich.

  • Above all, Oerlikon and the Zürichberg were affected.

  • News scouts describe the unique weather spectacle.

A storm front brought heavy hail in Zurich on Wednesday followingnoon. A strong shower cell with small-grain hail swept over Oerlikon – within just a few minutes the streets turned completely white.

As news scout Jacqueline Avila explains, it hailed intensely for 20 minutes. “I’ve never seen so much ice,” says the woman. She has lived in Switzerland for twelve years and this spectacle was unique for her. “The cars had to stop, they mightn’t continue with so much hail,” says Avila.

News scout S. was also fascinated by the weather spectacle. “Everyone here in the office is out, it was a show,” she says. The hail came down really hard. Then it suddenly got cold, according to S. In the meantime, the grains on the road had melted away, “but there is still ice on the meadow opposite”.

Hail also fell over the Zürichberg, as shown in pictures by news scout Gisela. “Here it took five, ten minutes at most,” she says. She had been sitting on her terrace with a colleague a quarter of an hour earlier, “but then it happened”. Their plants suffered the most. “The flowers were damaged.” There is still ice in the flower pots.
