Weather Roulette in F1. Mercedes Fastest, Verstappen Has Problems

The second Formula 1 practice session for the Dutch GP took place in completely different conditions than the morning session at Zandvoort. The rain stopped, the wind eased and the sun emerged from behind the clouds. It should come as no surprise that the drivers left the pit lane immediately. They were keen to make up for the losses incurred in the earlier practice session.

Dry asphalt meant that the F1 drivers made quick work of the times they had achieved in the morning. To the delight of the local fans, Max Verstappen drove a very fast “lap” and came in first with a time of 1:12.131.

Despite the better conditions, the changing wind direction could cause problems for drivers. George Russell, who was one of the first to explore the gravel verge, found out for himself. “It was strange,” the Mercedes representative admitted over the radio. A moment later, Sergio Perez had a similar adventure.

Nico Hulkenberg took a moment to rest in the second F1 practice session. The Haas driver crashed his car into the barriers at the first corner, causing a red flag. It took officials several minutes to remove the German’s damaged car.

After the session resumed, we had a simulation of qualifying. Oscar Piastri drove a great lap (1:10.763), which gave the Australian first place. After a while, his result was improved by George Russell, who was ultimately the fastest driver in the second F1 practice session before the Dutch GP.

There was discontent in the Ferrari garage as Carlos Sainz missed almost all of practice due to a gearbox failure.
