Weather: Hot winds and 41 degrees Celsius expected on Friday

The weather will be hot tomorrow Friday (16/08/2024) as the temperature will reach 41 degrees Celsius and combined with the strong winds, it increases the risk of fire.

The weather on Friday (16/08/2024) will be particularly hot with the temperature on the mainland reaching 41 degrees while the winds locally will reach 8 Beaufort, resulting in a high risk of fire.

According to EMY’s forecast, the weather on Friday (16/08/2024) will be generally clear while the winds will blow from northerly directions 4 to 6 Beaufort, in the Aegean 7 and locally up to 8 Beaufort.

In the midday and afternoon hours, temporary clouds will develop in the continental areas and local rains will occur in the mountains and isolated storms in the mountains of Macedonia.

On the islands it will reach 33 to 34 degrees and locally on the islands of the Ionian, the eastern Aegean and in southern Crete 36 to 38 degrees Celsius.

Very high temperatures were recorded by the network of automatic weather stations of meteo.gr/National Observatory of Athens on Thursday 15/08.

As can be seen in the following map, the maximum temperature was recorded in Vrachneika Achaia with 42.1 °C. Furthermore, the average maximum temperature in the country was equal to 35.2 °C, while 174 of the 488 active stations (at the present time) recorded temperatures above 37 °C, of ​​which 30 recorded temperatures above 40 °C.

According to the meteo on Friday, August 16, 2024, sunshine is expected throughout the country with a few local clouds. During the warm hours of the day, the clouds in the continental highlands will increase and rain or storms will occur, mainly in the central and northern highlands.
The temperature will vary in Western Macedonia from 15 to 36 degrees, in the rest of northern Greece from 18 to 36-37, in Thessaly from 20 to 39-41, in Epirus from 20 to 38-39 degrees, in the rest of the continental parts from 20 to 38-40 and locally 41 degrees, in the Ionian Islands from 22 to 36-38 degrees, in the Aegean islands and in Crete from 22 to 32-34 degrees, while in the Eastern Aegean islands and in South Crete the maximum will locally reach 38 degrees Celsius.
The winds in the Aegean will blow from northerly directions with intensities of 5-6 and locally 7 Beaufort. Northwesterly winds with intensities of 3-5 Beaufort will blow in the Ionian.

In Attica we expect a few clouds. Winds will blow from north directions with intensities of 4-5 Beaufort and possibly locally in the east 6 Beaufort. The temperature will range from 27 to 37-38 degrees, but in the north and in the east the maximums will be 3-4 degrees lower.
In Thessaloniki we expect sunshine and from midday temporarily increased clouds with the possibility of temporary rain in the mountains. The winds will blow weak and during the warm hours of the day from southern directions with intensities of 3-4 Beaufort. The temperature will range from 25 to 35 degrees.

Very high fire danger in 8 regions
Tomorrow (16.08.2024) Attica, Kythira, Evia, Boeotia, Fthiotida, Argolis, Corinthia, Laconia, Halkidiki, Evros, the northern Aegean islands and the Cyclades are on “orange” alert due to the very high risk of fire.
The temperature will reach up to 41 degrees while Beaufort will reach 8 Beaufort in the Aegean. The authorities will be on alert in order to prevent fires that may occur.

The regions with a very high fire risk:

-Region of Attica, including the island of Kythira
-Region of Central Greece (PE Fthiotida, PE Boeotia, PE Evia, including the island of Skyros)
-South Aegean Region (Cyclades Regional Units)
– North Aegean region
-Region of Central Macedonia (Halkidiki PE, including Mount Athos)
-Region of Eastern Macedonia & Thrace (Thasos PE, Evros PE, including the island of Samothraki)
– Peloponnese Region (Corinthia Region, Argolis Region, Laconia Region)
Almost all of the rest of Greece is at high risk.

The General Secretariat of Civil Protection has alerted the co-competent state agencies as well as the Regions and Municipalities of the aforementioned areas, in order to be on increased alert for any fire incidents.

At the same time, it recommends that citizens be especially careful and avoid outdoor activities that could inadvertently cause a fire, such as the burning of dry grass and branches or cleaning residues, the use of machines that cause sparks, such as circular saws, and welding devices, the using outdoor grills and throwing lighted cigarettes, among others. Also, it is recalled that during the fire protection season burning of fields is prohibited. If a fire is detected, citizens should immediately notify the Fire Service by calling 199.
