We will no longer come under threat of black coat and robe: Bilawal Bhutto

Chairman of Pakistan People’s Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has said on Monday that ‘this time we will come under the threat of neither black coat nor black robe’ on the issue of constitution.

Addressing the lawyers during an event in Quetta, he said that it is not only necessary to create a constitutional court, but also to change the system of judicial appointments. This time we will not be threatened with black coats or black robes.’

He further said that ‘this right belongs only to the people, they can tell me that I am doing wrong or right after making the constitution and they will tell me during the election.’

Speaking of the past, he said that on the occasion of the eighteenth amendment, we Judiciary was told that ‘You withdraw it or we will nullify the entire Eighteenth Amendment which restored the Constitution.’

According to him: ‘We forced the 19th Amendment to be passed at his behest. The judges, through their rules, abolished the authority of the committee of parliament, while the constitutional amendment was also forced through the rules.

Bilawal Bhutto said that this judicial system is not for the people but only for the judges.

“It is a matter of judicial merit that I have to wait 50 years to give justice to Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.”

He said that ‘it cannot be that we come under pressure and do not do a thing that is necessary.’

He said that the People’s Party does not say that we will solve all the problems of the country in one day, we will end the problems of economy and terrorism.

“Such reforms will be brought in the court that the people will start getting justice overnight, but at such a time, Pakistan People’s Party’s effort is to work for the people according to its manifesto and ideology.”

According to him: ‘When Shaheed Ms. Benazir Bhutto proposed judicial reforms, then we had clarified a system regarding the appointment of judges.

“Under this system, the candidates for appointment would be judges and lawyers, but the decision would be made by the parliamentary committee, which would include members of the opposition and the government.”

He said that ‘I think that we have to look at the system of appointment of judges along with the establishment of constitutional courts.

“Otherwise, if you make any new court or make a new bench, if you continue to make such appointments, then our system will continue to function like this.”

Earlier, while giving a speech in Karachi, he said that in the proposed constitutional amendment, no consensus has been reached regarding the age of the judges of the Constitutional Court and other courts.

Addressing the Sindh High Court Bar, Bilawal Bhutto said that ‘as far as the question of the age of judges is concerned, my opinion is similar to yours, of course it is important to create a consensus on it.’

Bilawal Bhutto said that ‘every party has its own position, but the position of my own party is that especially in the constitutional court which is going to be formed, the age requirement of the judges may become controversial.’
