We want to resume dialogue with Turkey on joining NATO

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said today, Tuesday, that his country wants to resume dialogue with Turkey About the applications of Sweden and Finland to join NATO so that this can be done quickly.

“There is no other national security issue more important than that we and Finland quickly become members of NATO,” Kristersson told reporters.

indefinitely

This comes following Turkey postponed indefinitely planned talks with Sweden and Finland regarding the membership application following the far-right Swedish-Danish Rasmus Paludan burned a copy of the Qur’an in a separate demonstration authorized by the police at noon on Saturday in front of the Turkish embassy in the Swedish capital, Stockholm.

According to press reports, quoting diplomatic sources, that the talks were scheduled to take place in early February, according to AFP.

On Monday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that Sweden, a candidate for NATO membership, might no longer count on Ankara’s “support”.

Finnish Swedish application

It is noteworthy that Sweden and Finland had applied last year to join the alliance following they had declined to do so in the past for not angering Russia.

But they changed their position following the Russian military operation in Ukraine, which in turn is seeking to join the alliance, to no avail.

According to the rules of the alliance, all members must agree to join the new members.

While Turkey and Hungary have not yet given the green light to Sweden and Finland.
