Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi called on Al-Azhar and the government to prepare a personal status law, stressing that divorce rates have increased dramatically in the last 20 years.

He said during a telephone interview with one of the Egyptian satellite channels that we want a marriage contract that solves the issue of divorce, stressing that the contract and the law must be the ruler and regulator of this issue, demanding that the new law be balanced and balanced.

He added: We will all be held accountable before God, whether judges, government, parliament, or Azhar, expressing his fears that when the dominant bloc becomes divorce, the idea of ​​marriage may be abandoned.

President Sisi added that personal status issues are among the most serious issues facing our society and affect its future in one way or another, noting that the details of personal status issues have been heard regarding for 40 years and still exist until now.

An Egyptian MP had announced that she had submitted a proposal for a new personal status law that defines the conditions for marriage, divorce and child custody.

Nashwa El-Deeb, a member of the House of Representatives, revealed that she has prepared a draft law on amending the Personal Status Law, which will be discussed during the upcoming sessions, in preparation for taking the final opinion on it.

The Egyptian Women’s Issues Foundation, a human rights organization concerned with women’s issues, revealed its participation in preparing the law over the past 20 years, stressing that it was keen on drafting and drafting the law proposal under the slogan “a more just family law”, and held dialogues and discussions on it in various governorates of the republic to obtain an opinion and consensus. community around it.

The law included several new provisions, the most prominent of which was Article Sixteen, which stipulates the right of the wife in the event her husband wants to marry, that the court should review her and obtain approval from her. If she refuses, the court has the right to intervene and try to reconcile between them.

The article stipulated that if the husband insists on polygamy and remarries his wife, the wife has the right to request a divorce and obtain all her entitlements within a month from the date of the divorce, noting that if the wife agrees to her husband’s marriage to another, she must ask him to commit to providing all her expenses and those of her children As well as her legitimate rights and follow-up to the upbringing of children, and here the court recognizes the husband’s polygamy, and in the event of his negligence or inaction, she is entitled to divorce and also obtains all her rights as a divorced woman.

Article 19 of the new law stipulated the conditions for equalizing wealth upon divorce, as it included that a text may be written at marriage to divide the wealth, property and money that is formed during the marital period, and in the event of divorce, it is divided equally or proportionally and according to the agreement, and this is in contrast to rights The other is for the wife resulting from the divorce, stressing that the material return, inheritance or gift that belongs to one of the spouses, or was formed before marriage, does not enter into the agreement.
