“We usually see that… in Lapland!” (Pictures)

But what happened in the Belgian sky this Wednesday? On his Facebook page, meteorologist Ruben Weytjens shared pictures of a rather spectacular phenomenon that has occurred above our heads in the past 24 hours. “It is a unique physical phenomenon. What we saw above Limburg on Wednesday is something you often see in Lapland,” he explained to HBVL.

Indeed, many Belgians in the north of the country were surprised to see luminous circles and semi-arcs traced between the clouds. These are called “halos”.

“You can sometimes see it appear, but not so often and not as much as this time. It all depends on the type of ice crystals that form five or ten kilometers above us. Sunlight is refracted or reflected off of these crystals, giving rise to all these weird shapes. The thin cloud veils also play an important role,” explains the meteorologist.
