Almost a year after the release of Sonic Frontiers, for which we had offered a home test, it was possible to try SEGA’s new game, Sonic Superstars, during Gamescom 2023.
After a short verbal presentation from the Japanese studio team, we take the controller to start a game in cooperation with another journalist. The screen is not split when we play two, three or four. Indeed, if one of the characters leaves the screen, for various reasons, it disappears. We can then recall it at any time by pressing a key and resume the course of the game. Four iconic characters are playable: Sonic, Knuckles, Tails and Amy, each with their own characteristics.
From the first seconds of play, we return to our childhood. A small nostalgic side is immediately felt. Sonic Superstars is 2D, very fluid, very fast and just beautiful. Our reflexes are put to the test to chain jumps, rolls, dodges and changes of direction. What a pleasure !
Three levels are playable for this session, the first of which strangely reminds us of the levels of Sonic The Hedgehog. For the others, we are propelled into a pinball-type zone and the last into a completely pixelated level, where we can transform into a jellyfish and a rocket. But do not think that this game is a simple remake, because novelties have indeed been made.
Teleporters are hidden in each painting, which, if discovered, transport us to a special level. Then begins a little game where you have to hang on to several points in succession, using a pendulum system. We have to go and catch a Chaos Emerald, which, depending on the color, gives us different powers. In our case, we found a blue one, allowing the use of a water power, and a red one, for a fire power. The first allows you to pass through a waterfall to unlock a shortcut, while the second grants phenomenal power to destroy walls. What sympathetically modify the original gameplay, with hours of fun, alone or with friends.
Sonic Superstars will be released on October 17 this year for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4|5, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC.
