We played Mortal Kombat 1, a reboot that looks very solid

Expected September 19 on PC, Xbox Series and PS5, Mortal Kombat 1 should be one of the most popular games by the press and the general public at the end of the year. This episode is particularly awaited at the turn. First of all, because it is the first reboot of the franchise. Then because the developers have planned to put the package on the guests, with emblematic characters like JC Van Damme, or Homelander from the series The Boys. Finally, because in terms of content, this episode should be full of new things.

While at Gamescom, we were able to try this new episode for almost an hour. We won’t scan all of the content in this preview. The test was limited to 40 minutes of gameplay in a new game mode called “Invasion” and around 20 minutes of gameplay in the single-player mode.

As for the single-player mode, it is a continuation of that of the previous parts. We feel it, however, we go up a level in terms of production, with cutscenes and a much more elaborate scenario, to the point that we come to wonder if Netherealm should not produce the next Mortal films itself. Fight. The cutscenes are long, extremely neat, with quality dialogues and many secondary characters. The fights are also linked quickly and allow us to incarnate in turn all the key characters of the franchise. In terms of casting, we find Baraka, Johnny Cage, Kitana, Mileena, Raiden, Rain, Scorpion, Sub Zero and even Reptile. More than twenty characters have already been announced.

The new Invasion game mode was presented by the studio as the “big news” of this episode. In Invasion, the player moves across a vast playing field, from square to square. With each new square, a new challenge awaits him. These can be battles, mini-games, challenges or rewards. This is where you’ll unlock a bunch of skins for your characters. If you’re having trouble imagining how the game mode looks like, consider Mario Party and take out the multiplayer component. You will progress on the board and over the fights will earn new rewards. With these you will be able to unlock advantages at the merchant and thus make your life easier in some more difficult challenges. Some specificities are on the program such as the need in certain fights to chain certain types of blows. A few mini-games are also on the program. We came across one during our game session. In it, we had to avoid green bubbles by moving on the screen, crouching or jumping. Each bubble that touched us took away a little energy. The concept is nice and somewhat reminiscent of the progression in the Krypt of ancient Mortal Kombat. That being said, the progression also felt excessively repetitive to us.

During our test sequence, we were undoubtedly impressed by the realization of the title, which fully exploits the potential of the next generation consoles. Upon its release, MK 1 will undoubtedly be the most beautiful fighting game that exists today. The sets are sumptuous and teeming with details, the characters are modeled with particular attention and the staging is extremely neat. Without too much spoiler, the “fatalities” that characterize the series, are also eye-popping with extremely visual beheadings, dismemberments and implosions. MK1 is a real graphic slap.

On the gameplay side too, the title seduces with controls that are largely inspired by what we had already known with MK 11, and a system of fatalities and simplified team combos. Two-player attacks are launched – one of the great novelties of this episode which is played in tag – by pressing the two bumpers, as soon as the gauge is reloaded. The fatalities are also chained quickly. We feel it, in a few years, the game has gained a lot in accessibility while still being very technical. The gameplay is a real treat.

During the preview, however, we might not see many game modes or different levels. We will therefore have some doubts regarding the final quality of the game, but for now, it looks promising. Note also that for the first time, Netherealm sees a “game as a service” potential with MK1. The Invasion mode will benefit from new content every six weeks, to encourage fans to return regularly to the game, with an experience that we are promised constantly renewed.
