We played Grendizer, the adaptation of the cult anime into a video game

On the occasion of Gamescom, in Cologne, we were able to test for nearly an hour the adaptation of Goldorak in video games.

Published by Microids, the title is developed internally, in one of the studios of the French publisher. And if, in the past, Microids has not always presented a radiant image, we must admit that its latest productions have charmed us. We think of the excellent Marsupilami, but also of the nice Arkanoid reboot. The following? A package of comic book adaptations in video games, but not only since the publisher also recently announced the adaptation of Goldorak in video games.

And if we did not necessarily expect a slap, we must admit that we were rather pleasantly surprised by this first contact with the game. First of all because visually, the game is very correct. It’s certainly not a graphic slap, but the environments of the game are neat, the visual effects very successful and the artistic direction is very faithful to that of the anime.

What strikes at first glance is the fidelity to the original material: these are the models that we saw in our childhood trend in the anime, the original music has been re-recorded for the occasion , and one of Grendizer’s official designers, Philippe “Golgoth71” Dessoly, lent a hand to the studio on this project.

The game takes the form of a curious mixture of genres since in practice, we will alternate here three types of sequences: hand-to-hand combat in the skin of Grendizer, shooting sequences inspired by “bullet hell” in the Cave and flight sequences that also incorporate dogfights. An explosive mix of genres that actually works quite well.

It should be noted from the outset that the studio did not hesitate to show originality in the fights. We are not pushed here to bludgeon the buttons to defeat the adversaries. De facto, you will have to be a strategist and above all on the lookout for the symbols that will be displayed above your opponents. Several combinations will weaken the enemies, but it will be necessary to regularly use a laser to blow up their protection. It will also happen that they use a shield which will have to be blown up by chaining together a series of very specific attacks… The melee combats are intense and rather gripping. During the demo, we also had the opportunity to face a rather strong boss, who forced us to remain very mobile with his aerial attacks. Dodging is heavily used.

The “bullet hell” type shoot sequences, in “top view” are also very successful. The pacing is good, the placement of enemies excellent, and the screen is regularly saturated with shots and opponents.

Conversely, we were a little disappointed with the aerial combat sequence, not very interesting to play and above all very redundant in terms of its course. We feel it, Microids may have wanted to do too much with a fairly tight budget.

Another important aspect to highlight, which was presented to us during this demo, the game will also integrate elements specific to RPGs with components to be recovered during missions that will improve the skills of your robot. Elements which for some can only be recovered in certain missions, a roundabout way of making you replay the same mission several times…

On the whole, this adaptation of Grendizer therefore promises to be rather successful. It’s clearly not a triple-A game that will blow your mind, but the good amount of fan-service, the very solid gameplay and the few very good ideas that we could see in this demo convinced us that this is a promising title. The final verdict will fall at the end of the year.
