While at Gamescom, we were able to preview the highly anticipated sequel to Flashback, a video game classic released in 1992 on the Amiga.

If he had already been entitled to multiple reissues, remasters and remakes, Flashback had so far never been entitled to a sequel. Released in 1992 on the Amiga, the title is considered a classic today for many reasons. It was one of the first true adventure games to mix action and platforms.

Good news for fans, if its sequel is developed at Microids, the project is overseen by Paul Cuisset, the father of the franchise. And following a first contact with the game, we can tell you that it turns out to be extremely faithful to the original.

Like the original, Flashback 2 is played on a two-dimensional plane. It takes up the gameplay, the atmosphere and the universe of the first part, while modernizing most of the elements of the game. Here we go from 2D to 2.5D. Understand by this that if we always play on a 2D plan, the sets now have depth. You will be able to evolve in larger areas, but still with a side view giving the impression of being faced with a two-dimensional game. On the technical side, the title is very successful. While respecting the Flashback universe, the developers have designed a real double-A game, with extremely neat decorations and visual effects.

During the demo, we didn’t really get a glimpse of the scenario. We will therefore come back to this point in the test. On the other hand, we were able to test the gameplay thoroughly through two levels of the game – the title has five in total, very long, according to the developers.

The first level acted as a tutorial, and allowed us to understand how the gameplay works. We quickly get our bearings. The game alternates sequences of fairly simple platforms and shooters. Mostly, it feels like a twin stick shooter, and it suits him pretty well. The approach is therefore, casually, a bit different from that of the original, with more action. The game also features a pretty hardcore difficulty with extremely aggressive enemies that knock your life bar down in mere moments. It will therefore be necessary to be very vigilant in the progression, to avoid dying untimely because in just a few seconds, you can be overloaded by the attacks of your opponent.

According to the developers, the game will also feature combat sequences aboard a mech and sequences aboard a jet bike. Other elements that have not been shown to us: the infiltration aspect and the RPG side of the game. The player can indeed improve his arsenal throughout the adventure and hide in the shadows to escape his opponents.

If, on paper, the project is extremely attractive, pad in hand, we were also rather charmed by this first contact. The game is quite pretty overall, faithful to the original, pleasant to play, and manages to alternate several gameplay sequences. bubbles that appear on the screen… Fans can however expect a rather successful sequel.
