CHAIRMAN of the Institute for National Harmony (IHN) Sudirman Said invited all parties to review the concept of national leadership after the 2024 elections. According to him, the requirements for becoming a national leader or President and Vice President as regulated in Article 169 of the Election Law are too loose and do not cover qualitative aspects.

“Criteria that are too normative and administrative, not reinforced with qualitative aspects, cause the filters to be very loose. “Almost everyone who graduates from high school can enter the contestation arena for the election of the country’s highest leadership,” said Sudirman at the National Forum Panel: Indonesian Leadership Thoughts held by the 2045 Forum at the Yogyakarta University Club, Saturday (16/3).

Apart from Sudirman Said, other speakers were also present at the event, namely Prof. M. Baiquni, Professor of Regional Geography, Gadjah Mada University (UGM); Prof. Armaidy Armawi, Professor at the Faculty of Philosophy UGM; Prof. Heru Kurnianto, Professor of Human Resources and Organization Management, Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta, and Prof. Ni’matul Huda, Professor of Constitutional Law at UII.

Sudirman continued, with leadership conditions that are too loose it makes it seem like anyone is allowed to enter the contestation arena without strict filters. According to him, it is very ironic that to become the leader of even a micro company requires various strict requirements.

“Requirements only apply to the company, so being a CEO has strict and complicated requirements. It’s a one-institution micro sector, while leading a country the entry requirements are very loose. If the standards and patterns for recruiting top leaders are like that, then what about the others?” said the former Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources.

Apart from the requirements being too loose, the election mechanism which requires presidential and vice presidential candidates to win based solely on numbers makes the quality of democracy even worse.

“Besides the filter being too loose, the method of choosing only based on numbers, 50% plus 1, also allows anyone who can ‘buy’ voters to advance in the contest. “This is what causes today’s election to be called the worst election,” stressed Sudirman.

He is worried that if the requirements for the nation’s highest leadership are so loose, it will result in a degradation of leadership at the next level of leadership down to the bottom.

“So it is not surprising that ignoring ethics, norms and science is normal because of the poor quality of our leadership,” said Sudirman.

Therefore, Sudirman invited the professors who attended the forum as well as the public to correct this. Moreover, said Sudirman, history proves that the Indonesian nation has the ability to correct mistakes in the nation’s leadership.

“It takes a collective effort from intelligent people to formulate the concept of public leadership in the future, and disseminate it in the form of public education,” concluded Sudirman Said. (AT/Z-7)
