“We need a European strategy. We are on the front lines” –

“While in Italy there are those who are only concerned with polemics, I am busy in these hours in Cyprus at the meeting of the Ministers of Agriculture of the Mediterranean countries, Med Cyprus 2024”. This is the message launched by the Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forests Francesco Lollobrigida. “In this context”, explains Lollobrigida, “we are discussing the problems linked to climate change in agriculture to identify community tools to support agricultural businesses. A meeting requested by Italy to define a European strategy on drought and identify adequate financial resources”. “During the meeting, which was attended by the nine nations bordering the Mediterranean, Greece, Spain, France, Cyprus, Malta, Slovenia, Portugal and Croatia, in the presence of the outgoing EU Commissioner, Janusz Wojciechowski, we shared the ‘Famagusta Document’, where we reiterate our determination to address the problem of water scarcity and to ensure a future for our farmers”, continues the minister. «Italy, with the Meloni Government, once again proves to be a leader in Europe in defense of Italian agriculture».

“The ministry”, underlines the head of Masaf, “is working like never before in past governments to protect farmers and provide a listening ear, timely responses and centrality to the agricultural sector. In recent years, we have invested resources never seen before to support supply chains in crisis and the relaunch of investments. We have made a breakthrough in the management of emergencies that have afflicted the sector for many years and we have strengthened the system of controls to protect businesses and citizens”. “Our commitment continues, and we will reiterate it at the G7 Agriculture and Fisheries that will be held on the island of Ortigia in Syracuse, between 26 and 28 September, where we will underline the importance of the agri-food, livestock, fish farming and fishing systems and the centrality they must play. A principle that must become a concrete priority for all G7 countries and beyond”, concluded the minister of the Meloni government.
