“We must not hesitate”: Flanders ready to collaborate with the Netherlands to build two new nuclear power plants

“Even if it is assumed that Flanders is not competent in energy production, there is actually no obstacle to a collaboration with the Dutch government. The Flemish Energy Agency and Climate has invested more than 1.5 billion euros in renewables, renovation and heating networks in recent years. Investment in nuclear power via the Netherlands is also possible”, underlines the Minister.

“In view of the concerns regarding the supply in Belgium and the choice of the Dutch government of a place close to the border (Borssele, editor’s note), we are going to start discussions on collaboration and/or participation in the nuclear project of the If we can ensure the supply of Flanders in this way, we should not hesitate”, continues Ms. Demir.

A first meeting on the file should take place at the end of January.

For his part, the Dutch minister told the ANP agency that collaboration was “not ruled out” but that it was still premature to talk regarding it. The government is in favor of two new power stations, but questions of financing, in particular, have yet to be decided.
