“We must inflict significant defeats on Russia”

Ukraine continued its attacks on Russian territory in the Kursk region yesterday. According to the government in Kiev, this offensive is necessary to persuade Russia to enter into peace talks. “We must inflict significant tactical defeats on Russia,” wrote Mykhailo Podoliak, the head of staff of President Volodymyr Zelensky, on Telegram.

The Ukrainian troops unexpectedly crossed the border on August 6 and advanced into Kursk. According to their own statements, they have since conquered more than 1,000 square kilometers of land. “In the Kursk region, we can clearly see how military means are being used in a targeted manner to force the Russian Federation to accept a fair negotiation process,” says Podoljak.

Yesterday, Kiev’s airborne troops released a video of the alleged first hours of the operation. August 6 will go down in the history of the war as a “historic day,” the combat unit announced. An accompanying text said: demining, breaching the border, destruction of the enemy’s defenses, air strikes, artillery fire and the capture of prisoners of war. Russia’s border guards were completely surprised by the attack.

Exposure for Kremlin chief Putin

The authenticity of the recordings, which were accompanied by music like in an action film, could not be independently verified. They also made the rounds on numerous Ukrainian and Russian news sites.

The operation is also seen as an exposure for Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin. After starting his war of aggression against Ukraine, he repeatedly promised security to the people of the world’s largest country by area.

Crimean Bridge: Attack repelled

Meanwhile, Moscow reported the launch of 12 ATACMS missiles from Ukraine at the Crimean bridge. The Ministry of Defense did not publish any evidence of this. However, Ukraine has repeatedly stated that it wants to destroy the bridge as soon as it has the military means to do so, because the structure was built illegally. The bridge is considered one of the best-secured Russian structures, having been the target of several attacks and damaged in the past. For Russia, the bridge is the most important connection to Crimea, which is visited by hundreds of thousands of guests in the summer. Rail and road traffic on the bridge is repeatedly temporarily suspended when air raid warnings are issued.
