What is the cyber campus?
« We are a crossroads, a hub. The goal of the Campus Cyber Hauts-de-France Lille Métropole is to bring together the community of companies that carry out cybersecurity for the benefit of all those who need it: businesses and communities. », Develops Florence Puybareau, director of operations at Campus Cyber. Originally, a national cyber campus was created at La Défense, with the prospect of being rolled out to regional campuses because “ cyber has no borders and it is necessary to have a presence everywhere to spread information and awareness about this threat “. Labeled in June 2022, it is operated in Hauts-de-France by EuraTechnologies. Physically located in Lille, “ it aims to work with the entire region “. It notably hosts the CSIRT, the cyber incident response center, which since its creation in March 2023 has supported 170 structures (VSEs, SMEs, ETIs, communities) victims of attacks.
Why a “cyber summit”?
« We bring together a community of 70 members (technology companies, associations, consular networks, etc.). It is important to see each other, and to offer businesses and communities conferences, workshops, to exchange ideas, to be inspired, to discover new solutions, to learn about new threats. It’s okay to say that there is a risk of fire in your home. But the important thing is to know how to protect yourself. »
Where is the threat status?
Whether attacks with the aim of spying on a company or to harm an administration, “ the cyber threat is very high! Phishing campaigns are becoming more and more sophisticated. Attackers use very powerful tools », observes Florence Puybareau. However, if the threat is very great for large companies, “ they protect themselves, they have invested. But the smallest have neither the means nor the tools and do not know how to do it. Some entities are not protected and it goes in like butter! » The consequence is a ransom, the blocking of their system with a loss of activity, or even the failure of the company. “ When the global cybersecurity market is worth $500 billion, we have to add a zero for cybercrime! Creating malware costs a few thousand euros. If we manage to phish ten or twenty structures, the return on investment is enormous. SMEs, VSEs and even ETIs are the most threatened. »
Why is the region a cyber stronghold?
The Cyber Campus has taken over the “cyber vertical” of EuraTechnologies, and supports the development of young companies in the sector. “ With incubation and acceleration (and beyond because OverSoc which is one of the regional champions which left the system but is resident on the campus), there are 15 to 20 start-ups attached to the Cyber Campus Hauts-de-France Lille Métropole . » Or, « there are 168 start-ups in France in this field. The regional Cyber Campus is one of the largest incubators in France alongside the Cyber Booster in Paris, the cyber center of excellence in Rennes which is attached to the Ministry of the Armed Forces… » The reason for this concentration? “ There is the know-how of EuraTechnologies which sourcing start-ups; and also the technological environment of Hauts-de-France with engineering schools, large companies like Vade, Advens, Orange Cyberdéfense, Thales, IBM… »
Creating a start-up in cybersecurity, mission impossible?
The cyber threat is very present but, observes Florence Puybareau, “ overall, there is a slowdown in investment in the cybersecurity market “. In a context of cooling fundraising in the innovation sector, and start-ups in particular, “ cyber start-ups, however, manage to finance themselves. But unlike other sectors, it is not easy to create a cybersecurity start-up. ” For what ? “ In cybersecurity, you need a very good technical level to differentiate yourself. This can be a hindrance. » and in fact, “ those who create have a certain maturity. They worked in state services (teaching, army, etc.) or worked in a company and were able to bring their project to fruition. We try to do sourcing in engineering schools. But it’s difficult. It’s up to us to go to research labs, to cybersecurity companies, to support those who would like to create their own business.. »
