We love wild nature – but only as long as we can control it

Recently, Northern Jutland has focused on how the wild nature has started to take up more space – both in private gardens and in urban planning.

In the Aalborg district of Vejgaard live Søren Knorr Søndergaard and his family, and they are some of those who have let the garden grow wild, and they are thus part of a growing crowd that lets nature run free – even in the tight confines of the city .

– Some listen curiously when I share our thoughts about the garden, others don’t see the point at all, says Søren Knorr Søndergaard in the interview with Nordjyske.

The showdown with the trimmed and well-kept nature has also moved into Aalborg Municipality.

Here, for many years, people have worked actively with biodiversity. At first it caused concern and anger, but over time the idea has gained traction, and the citizens have now embraced the wild nature as a natural part of the cityscape.

But the wild nature is more than just a romantic notion.

Another case that Nordjuyske has covered shows that nature’s wild side can also have serious consequences.

On the Panorama route by Mariagerfjord, a hiker experienced a violent collision with a free-ranging highland cattle, which resulted in bent ribs, bloody scratches and a great shock.

The incident caused the owner of the cattle to take the consequences. All cattle are removed from the natural area through which the walking route passes. At the same time, he has decided that the entire crew must be slaughtered.

– These are wild animals, and they already feel pressured, explains the owner, Jørgen Bak Rasmussen.

His decision underscores an important point: wild nature is not always something we can control or tame. It is unpredictable and can even be dangerous in some cases.

That brings us to the core.

We want wild nature, but only as long as it fits into our imaginations and complies with the rules we have set for it. Our fascination with the wild is often limited by our need for control. When nature steps out of the framework we have set for it, we are reminded that it is – banally enough – wild and untamed.

The challenge lies in finding a balance where we manage to give nature space without losing our grip on safety. We must find a form that benefits both nature and man.

This is a leader. It was written by a member of our board of directors and expresses Nordjutske’s position.
