In news mixed between strangeness and wit, the Canadian authorities announced that a pigeon carrying a bag full of drugs was arrested in the yard of a prison.
John Rundle, Pacific regional president of the Canadian Association of Correctional Officers, said the pigeon was arrested in the yard of the Pacific Correctional Institution in British Columbia on December 29, noting that a canvas backpack attached to the pigeon contained methamphetamine.
He noted that in recent years, prison officers have been searching for drones carrying drugs and other contraband, “but as a correctional officer, I hear for the first time in 13 years of the use of a bird.”
And he added, “The use of the bathroom raised difficulties in the investigation compared to drones, because the accuracy of the drone made it easy to identify the intended recipient of the smuggled goods,” considering that “the creativity of criminals in drug smuggling should be a source of concern for everyone.”
Davinder Ogla, an assistant warden at the Pacific Institute, confirmed there had been a “recent interception of contraband” at the facility and that the matter was under investigation.
