Having a headache or feeling dizzy may seem normal, and not many people take it seriously.

Common signs of a brain tumor can include these seemingly insignificant symptoms, which is why taking these signs seriously and seeing a doctor for a diagnosis becomes critical.

A brain tumor is a mass or growth of abnormal cells in the brain, which can be either noncancerous (benign) or cancerous (malignant).

However, a benign tumor can grow in size and become fatal.

Signs and symptoms don’t appear when a tumor develops. As a tumor grows, it may lead to certain symptoms.

When do the signs appear?

According to Cancer Research UK, symptoms occur either because they take up space inside the skull as they grow or because they are lodged in the brain.

The duration of growth can vary from person to person, lasting from more than a few months to even years, depending on how quickly it spreads.

Don’t underestimate these signs:

Headache that gradually increases in frequency and severity

Unexplained nausea or vomiting

Vision problems such as blurred vision, double vision, or loss of peripheral vision

Gradual loss of sensation or movement in an arm or leg

Difficulty balancing

Speech difficulties

– Fatigue and exhaustion

Confusion in everyday matters

Brain tumors and seizures:

According to the US National Brain Tumor Society, seizures are a sudden attack or convulsion caused by abnormal bursts of electricity in the brain.

Signs include: muscle cramps, staring, loss of consciousness, depending on body health, and changes in behavior and personality to note:

Experts believe that brain tumors can also cause personality changes and sudden mood swings.

This symptom is common in people whose tumor is located in the frontal lobe of the brain, the part that controls personality and emotions.

It also helps in regulating an individual’s ability to control and manage behaviour.

Who is at risk?

There is no way to predict who can and who cannot develop a brain tumor, however, there are some risk factors to consider.

According to the Mayo Clinic, exposure to radiation can make a person susceptible to developing a brain tumor.

Another cause might be a family history of brain tumors, that is, if someone in the family has had a brain tumor.
