We have the technology to build atomic bombs, but we won’t: Iran’s nuclear chief

TEHRAN: Iran’s nuclear chief says Iran might make atomic bombs with the country’s current technological capabilities, but it won’t.

Mohammad Eslami, head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, made a statement regarding this. The news was reported by Iranian media Fars News Agency.

Mohammad Islami said Iran has the technological capability to build an atomic bomb, but Iran has no intention of doing so. His statement was a warning.

Kamal Kharazi, a senior adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, also made a similar statement in July. Muhammad Islami was repeating it.

“As Kharazi mentioned, Iran has the technological capability to build a nuclear bomb, but such a project is not on our agenda,” Mohammad Islami said.

These statements prove Iran’s ‘interest’ in nuclear weapons.

Kharazi’s remark was also an indication that the Islamic Republic of Iran may be interested in nuclear weapons.

Iran is already enriching uranium to 60% fissile purity. This is far above the 3.67% limit set under Iran’s (now defunct) 2015 nuclear deal with the world. Uranium enriched up to 90% is suitable for a nuclear bomb.

It was in 2018 that the then US President Donald Trump withdrew from the nuclear deal with Iran.
