From the first image of a ship to the development of an intergalactic world including the slowdowns linked to Covid, the director of the video game looks back on the creation of this blockbuster, which lasted eight years.

For almost two decades, Todd Howard has been the man behind blockbusters at the famous video game studio Bethesda. After earning his stripes on The Elder Scrolls series, he took charge of relaunching the very popular Fallout license, in 2008, before earning his totem of immunity with the Skyrim box, three years later. Since then, recognized as one of the most influential directors in the industry, he led the creation of Starfield, the studio’s new mega-production, from start to finish. Libération met him in Cologne, as part of the Gamescom trade show, following having spent a little less than twenty hours on the game.

Can you describe the first “concept art” to us? [le fait d’imager une idée, ndlr] of Starfield, before its development?

There was not one but two images. The first is that of a ship which has just landed on an unknown planet, its two astronauts scanning the horizon from the surface. An image made to capture the feeling of discovering a new world and what it has to offer. The other concept art depicted the same ship but in space, because we knew we would have to install both types of exploration in the game, on the surface and in space. We widely shared
