“We have made the decision to revoke 25 grace pensions” – La Discusión 2024-02-17 10:58:48

President Gabriel Boric confirmed this Tuesday that he will revoke 25 grace pensions that were given to people with criminal records, also recognizing that there were “irregularities” in the process of granting this benefit.

“In the case of grace pensions there is a very outrageous situation. We have learned of background information that was not available at the time it was granted. We are talking regarding 18 thousand grace pensions granted a long time ago, of which 418 have a link to the social outbreak and of them there are regarding 60 in which people with honey history have been identified,” said the President.

However, the President was emphatic in pointing out that those people who have lost their eyeball during the social outbreak will continue to receive their gratuity pensions, which does not mean that they must “respond for their criminal responsibilities.”

“Pensions of grace are not a reward for merit. Therefore, in cases where there has actually been a serious violation of human rights, such as the loss of the eyeball, people will have to answer for the crime they have committed, but they have the right to be compensated,” he pointed out.

One thing does not remove the other. Criminal responsibilities must be faced and fulfilled,” he asserted.

In detail, the report of the Comptroller General of the Republic revealed the existence of 58 grace pensions given to people with criminal records and convictions for “violent crimes”, and that a dozen beneficiaries had not presented medical reports that support their categorization of human rights victim.

Faced with this, the Undersecretary of the Interior, Manuel Monsalve, blamed the government of former President Sebastián Piñera, following ensuring that said pensions were delivered under “rigorous” compliance with the procedure established by law.

Along these lines, President Gabriel Boric acknowledged that “from my personal perspective, there have been irregularities in the process. Not all the antecedents were visible, there were deficiencies in legal matters and in matters of decree.”

“For this reason, I commissioned the Ministry of the Interior to review not only the pensions that have come to light, but also each and every one of the folders and we have already made the decision to revoke 25 grace pensions, because they are not fulfilled.” the necessary requirements to sustain them,” he stated.

However, the authority does not rule out that more pensions will be revoked.

“This is a long-standing problem, some of the pensions were delivered in the previous government, another during our government. Therefore, there is a legal problem that goes beyond the responsibility of a person and we are solving that now,” he concluded.
