In 2024, Vác pastry chef Alfréd Kovács’ cake with the fantasy name of Mákvirág received the prestigious title of Cake of Hungary.

The Hungarian Confectionery Industry Council this year 18th time announced the confectionary competition called Hungary’s Cake. Speaking of which, August 20 is the national holiday, the feast of St. Stephen, the founder of the state, Hungary’s symbolic birthday, and the country’s cake is prepared every year to celebrate it. This title in 2024 Alfréd Kovács (Edes Vonal Confectionery) master confectioner from Vác Poppy flower it is worn by his fanciful cake. In addition, Hungary’s Sugar-Free Cake competition was announced, and this title is this year Ádám Novák and László Csonka (Reök Artisan Patisserie and Coffee House) confectioners from Szeged Green raspberry was awarded to his fanciful creation.

The maker of the Mákvirág cake, Alfréd Kovács, who is the pastry chef of the Édes Vonal Cukrászda in Vác, considers himself the “poppiest” person in the world. His cake is a own childhood, evokes the taste of poppy seed dough and black currants plucked in the garden, and the memory of grandma offering fresh cookies. In the cake poppy, poppy oil, black currant and black sesame they form a harmonious unity, which is topped off by almond flour poppy seed sponge and soft white chocolate cream.

The makers of the Zöld malna, Ádám Novák and László Csonka, are confectioners of the Reök Artisan Confectionery in Szeged. Their cake is red like raspberry, green like pistachio and elegant like rose.
