- The heads of state and government of the European Union will debate the post-election crisis in the country during the leaders’ summit
The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, noted on October 17 that the EU must be willing to use whatever measures are necessary to support the people of Venezuela in their democratic struggle.

The head of European diplomacy reiterated that from now until the moment Nicolás Maduro officially assumes the presidency in January, they will insist on saying that “there is no recognition without verification” of the results of the presidential elections of July 28.
“Maduro will not be recognized as democratically elected president by the EU if there is no verification of the results, and at the moment there is none,” Borrell added.
EU concern about the situation in Venezuela
European leaders are expected to give their approval at this summit to some conclusions, the draft of which seen by the EFE news agency underlines that the European Council continues to be “extremely concerned” about the situation in Venezuela and the reported human rights violations. in the post-electoral context.
“In Venezuela, repression continues. Opposition leaders had to go into exile or hide. And 2,000 people have been in prison. The harassment against the opposition continues,” Borrell said in this regard.
In the draft conclusions, the Twenty-seven urge the Venezuelan authorities to respect the democratic will of the Venezuelan people and put an end to violence, repression and harassment of the opposition and civil society, and to release political prisoners .
European leaders will reaffirm that only complete and independently verifiable results will be accepted and recognised.
Furthermore, the document states that they will influence the EU to continue working with its regional partners to support the Venezuelan people in their democratic aspirations.
According to the conclusions document, the EU will be willing to support a constructive and inclusive transition with guarantees for both parties, which can resolve the country’s political stalemate and restore democratic institutions peacefully.
International pressure
The high representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, assured on October 8 that the solution to the crisis in Venezuela has to emerge from international pressure.
“The solution to Venezuela cannot be more than political. It has to arise from international pressure,” Borrell said in a statement to the EFE news agency after his intervention in a debate on the situation in the Middle East in the European Parliament.
The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs was not in favor of imposing possible sanctions on Venezuela that could affect the population.
“I am not in favor of sanctions because they affect the people, the citizens, the Venezuelan people. They have not served to change the political course. We must be careful that they do not have an unwanted effect,” the official explained.
At the moment, sanctions do not appear in the draft conclusions of the summit of European leaders.
