We are twin sisters born under the sign of algorithms – Digital Economy Blog

As an identical twin, I have heard the phrases “I’ve always dreamed of having a twin” and “what’s it like to have a twin” many times. I don’t know what it does, because I’ve never lived without it. To you who repeat these sentences to all the twins you meet, your time has finally come. You can now have an identical double, in flesh and in…algorithm.

But what is a digital twin?

Digital twins, ‘digital twins’ in English, are virtual representations of an object or system that cover its life cycle. Digital twins are updated from real-time data and rely on simulation, machine learning and reasoning to facilitate decision-making. We can establish several digital twins of the same object, of the same person depending on the components we want to look at.

Why are they used in the healthcare sector?

To establish a patient’s digital twin, healthcare professionals will need to provide their medical history and physiological data. This digital twin will allow them to make an early and personalized diagnosis. Indeed, with the digital twin of a patient we can detect the warning signs of illness. Doctors can make a digital twin of the entire body or just one or more organs.

The startup Abyss Medical plans to establish itself as the standard in surgery by offering a three-in-one solution thanks to augmented reality, 3D printing and the digital twin. During operations, surgeons will be equipped with an augmented reality headset where they will be able to view a table with patient data and the digital twin of the area to be operated on, in order to reduce medical errors.

The digital double is also a real asset for the five billion people in the world who cannot have access to adequate surgical services in their country. The startup Veyond Metaverse has set up the Veyond Connect platform which, thanks to Extended Reality, allows surgeons to collaborate remotely.

Like all technologies, the digital twin can be scary. Some speak of an employment crisis among surgeons, because they allow some surgeons to be replaced by a remote surgeon. For the moment, this technology does not threaten the profession at all. Each operation is carried out with two surgeons: the operator, in contact with the patient, and the proctor, often a more experienced surgeon who assists remotely. On a platform like Veyond Connect, the operator has access to the instructions/information from the proctor through virtual reality. The proctor has the possibility of seeing the details of the areas to be operated on thanks to their digital twin.

A revolution in research and development

The digital twin makes it possible to accelerate the development of new treatments and therefore reduce the cost of research. We can find out more precisely what is not working. This technology can also mark the end of testing on animals and humans in both the health and cosmetics fields. Indeed, the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries will be able to test their molecules via simulations. In an article, the company TechToMed describes this development as “a move from in vivo testing to in silico testing (in reference to the silicon of computers)”.

You will therefore not be able to accuse your digital double of having committed certain misdeeds, but it can save your life.
