The government and the medical community are deeply conflicted over the increase in medical schools and appear to be in conflict over the authority to assess each medical school.

Medical school professors have taken to the streets amid strong opposition from the medical community to the government’s elimination of the Korea Institute of Medical Education and Evaluation, an autonomous organization for the medical community.

This day near the Yongsan Presidential Office in Seoul.

To mark the holiday, professors at medical schools that do not provide medical services held rallies dressed in white.

“If Congress is destroyed, medical education will be destroyed.”

They criticized the government for trying to weaken the Korea Medical Education Evaluation Institute, which is responsible for evaluating and accrediting educational conditions at medical schools.

Even if Congress determines that the medical school does not meet the standards, it is a protest against the government’s new special regulations to provide medical schools with a supplementary period of more than one year.

“If we want to push for an increase of 2,000 people, that is beyond common sense and is only possible by overcoming the hurdle of congressional certification.”

At today’s rally, about 400 people, including medical professors and medical students, came together to express concerns that if things continue as they are, doctors without proper training will be mass-produced.

In particular, this is the first time for a medical school professor to participate in such an off-site gathering.

“(The government) is doing its best to make sure it can pass congressional scrutiny, even if there is no space for education and practice, there is a lack of clinical training in hospitals, even if there are no professors teaching.”

Special provisions are in place in the event of a so-called “massive disaster”, but they criticize whether the government’s forced increase in medical schools caused the disaster.

“It’s the government that creates a disaster situation, and then, to fix it, they’re going to create an enforcement ordinance, fix it, and then move on. It feels like a self-inflicted racketeering ring.”

The medical community is particularly concerned that the government is changing the rules on the premise that “Congress does not exist or cannot function.”

It is said that the government is using its power to delegate the evaluation and accreditation function of medical schools to Congress to increase pressure.

Medical schools that are not accredited by the Medical Council may not allow new students to take the state physical examination, and in the worst case scenario, the school may be closed.
