“We are strengthening ourselves to change Chile” – La Discusión 2024-07-15 04:04:38

Convergencia Social (CS) and Revolución Democrática (RD) will seal their long-awaited merger on Monday to become the single party Frente Amplio, which will be the largest in the country with 62,000 members across the country, not counting the 11,000 members of the former Comunes party.

Because of this, Convergencia Social held its last meeting as a group this Saturday in the main hall of the University of Santiago, a symbolic place for that political sector, since it was where its coalition began in 2017 with Revolución Democrática.

The merger was highlighted by the president of CS, Diego Ibáñez, who stated that “we have been working for years on dialogues at a national level and today that process culminates.”

“The important thing is that we are getting stronger to change Chile,” said the parliamentarian, who also explained that “the Frente Amplio will begin a process of internal elections today, therefore, we will put together a new leadership and they will have all the responsibility of generating the design of alliances, work and proposals to advance the changes that Chile needs.”

He also said that the “Broad Front is strengthening its position to change Chile, to live better, and we humbly hope to offer the best political alternatives to this new generation that is emerging and is here to stay.”

The provisional leadership of the new Broad Front will be headed by Ibáñez.

The story of the merger began in March of this year, when the militants of Convergencia Social and Revolución Democrática approved the unification of both groups by more than 80% of the vote.

The plebiscite, which took place at the beginning of that month, concluded with a total of more than 10,000 votes cast through an online voting system. In Convergencia Social, 23% of the electoral roll voted, and in RD, 7%.

“In the Ñuble Region, both in Convergencia Social and Revolución Democrática, the merger of the Frente Amplio was approved. The number of militant participation was similar to the last internal elections of each party, so we value the level of commitment of the active militants. The merger of the Frente Amplio constitutes a historic milestone in the path we have traced as a progressive alternative in our country, which will have a positive impact on the level of strength and influence to continue working for dignity and social justice, by establishing ourselves as the largest left-wing party in Chile,” said the regional president of Convergencia Social, Francisca Leyton, on that occasion.

Meanwhile, the regional coordinator of RD, Katterina Osorio, said: “We have to understand that there is a proposal that seeks to respond to the demands of the country at this time, and we are in a process of construction and growth both as a party and as a collective of the Frente Amplio, which permanently urges us to face this type of challenges.”
