Digital 2023 is online, the new one report on We Are Social with all the important data on the behavior and habits of people on the net.
Even if the last few years (and months) have been marked by various jolts and changes, due first to health emergencies and then to geopolitical instability, the Italian landscape presents various confirmations and what is new: let’s analyze together, thanks to the slides of the report, the most relevant aspects.

The global study
The highlights of We Are Social around the world
From the global report, in collaboration with Meltwater, the following macro data are highlighted:
- The world population has reached 8.01 billion people as of early 2023. Just over 57% of the world’s population lives in urban settings.
- 5.44 billion people use smartphones, equal to 68% of the world’s population. Unique mobile users increased by just over 3% last year, with 168 million new users in the last 12 months.
- There are 5.16 billion Internet users, 64.4% of the world’s population is now online. Total global internet users have increased by 1.9% in the past 12 months.
- There are 4.76 billion social media users worldwideequal to just under 60% of the world’s population.

Highlights in Italy
The contraction of the Italian population continues and the largest demographic group is made up of the over 65s, who amount to just under 25%. In this scenario, it emerges that:
- We are more active on social media, with particular attention to the purpose.
- Videos are our favorite content, with a growing trend.
- Influencer Marketing is confirmed as a positive driving force for the digital industry.

The use of social media is growing
As also emerges from the global study, Italians spend less time online than last year, but a little more time on social media.
The number of people connected to the internet decreased slightly (the first since 2013), down by 0.3%.
The reasons for being online do not change significantly: look for information it is the main purpose for which Italians connect to the web, especially using smartphones and other mobile devices (desktops and laptops).
Italians love to watch videos online
Light content such as comedy and memes drive the growth in the use of video content: over 91% of people say they watch dynamic content.

How many Italians use social media
Almost 75% of Italians are active on social media (we are close to 44 million people). After a slight decrease recorded last year due to a different data collection methodology, the trend appears to be growing.
For what reasons
The main reasons why people visit and participate in the conversation on social media are related to getting informed, staying in touch with loved ones, spending time (all above 40%). This is followed closely by the search for inspiration on things to do or products to buy.
The platforms most used by Italians: Meta wins
The Meta group dominates the rankings of social platforms, thanks to WhatsApp which separates all others by involving 89% of people between 16 and 64 years old. Followed by Facebook (78%) and Instagram (73%).
Only 38% of Italians in the same age group declare that they use TikTok.
As for the platforms preferred by users, WhatsApp remains in first place, but Facebook gives second place to Instagram. TikTok and Telegram also switch positions, with the short video platform rising regarding ten points behind Facebook.
