This Monday, the Minister of Sports of Chile, Jaime Pizarro, will visit Chillán to monitor on the ground the progress of the works on the future BMX track of the Quilamapu Sports Complex, which following an investment of 1,591 million 342 thousand pesos, contributed by the Government Regional and the National Sports Institute, will feature a 360-meter-long circuit, two starters, perimeter closure and a grandstand for 250 people.
-Do you think that the generation of this infrastructure will contribute to the consolidation of a strategic sport in Ñuble and is it an example of the decentralization of investment?
-We are interested in promoting the sports development of the regions, from that, linking with the municipalities, the governorates and delegatestions, to generate equipment and infrastructure. We work together with GORE to enhance this track. So that more athletes stand out in this discipline. Each region has strategic disciplines. There is no doubt that the development of this track will allow us to have more athletes and this park life will allow the integration of the family in an attractive context.
–You will also visit the Pal Pal School, in the Santa Clara sector, where a multi-court is being built. Has the management emphasized the sports development of the rural areas of Chile, always more neglected?
-You express a relevant point within the framework of the commitment of the Government of President Gabriel Boric, who, in the 2021 public account, said that we must improve infrastructure in rural sectors. So in this school in Pal Pal, Santa Clara sector, it will be possible to improve the playground, with this field where the layouts have been made for the different sports disciplines. This contributes not only to academic life but also to pre-sports development and some competencies that children can experience. It has an enrollment of 200 students from prekindergarten to eighth grade, with many girls and boys. This addresses the territories furthest from the regional capitals, which is why we are deeply happy. “We are going to see the progress and collect experiences.”
-It will be two years of the current administration. In particular, what is the balance that your management makes?
-Without a doubt, the entire context of sporting activity had greater relevance with the Pan American and Para Pan American Games. Infrastructure development, coordinationnation for the organization of the Santiago 2023 Games and the deployment to have 42 venues with their disciplines and then 17 more venues for the Pa Gamesra Pan American Games. It was an important deployment with an incredible infrastructure development, because it not only gives a new look to the National Stadium Park, but also leaves it as an extraordinary multipurpose space, where we will receive events and activities.
-With respect to the legacy of the Pan American Games…Do you consider that, in addition to the contribution of infrastructure, they helped shape a sports culture that is fragile in Chile?
-Definitely. First, the infrastructure was well accompanied by the number of medals from our athletes who performed better than previous editions. More than one and a half million tickets were also sold, tripling previous Games. There was a high-level competition and a large community enjoying various sports disciplines with exemplary behavior. We reviewed a survey from the Andrés Bello University, which revealed that one of the most important moments of last year in Chile were the Games and that the community felt pride in that. For this reason, we will continue to insist on this type of events and project other initiatives.
-It was confirmed that there are strategic sports, which are not massive like football, but with historic results, which need more support.
-They have given us positive signs. The Fifth Region had a Sports Center packed with different activities. Volleyball had no tickets. Three-on-three basketball, which seems like lesser-known disciplines, was packed. Also at the Para Pan American Games there were incredible attendances.
-National Sports Day is celebrated in April. What milestones do you plan at the country level to celebrate?
-Through the Games, the torch relay connected the regions. This April 5, 6 and 7, we will do sports activities throughout the country, with the purpose of generating adhesion and participation on this day. Our regional directorates and the seremias have worked with the governorates, presidential delegations and municipalities to hold a great sports festival throughout the country. There will be a lot of family activity.
