The former president of SYRIZA-PS, Stefanos Kasselakis, intervenes in internal party developments, states that he will be present “in the battle of the many against the oligarchy that defends a corrupt government in retreat”, but avoids explicitly clarifying whether he will claim the leadership of the party .
In particular, Mr. Kasselakis in his article in the newspaper “Documento” states in principle that he rejected the suggestions to legally claim his rights after his “reduction” from the office of the president by the decision of the Central Committee. He specifically mentions: “The decision came automatically: I will not hurt the people of SYRIZA. The fight will be political. Political, clean, honest, with the truth in the light”.
He then explains why he did not proceed with the establishment of a new party: “I did not leave a laid-back life and career in the USA to come and ask MPs to follow me and do what others have done: shrink SYRIZA. I gave up my life to exist through SYRIZA, to help SYRIZA grow with all my strength.”
To the question “Why not something new?” Why SYRIZA?” he answers: “Because I believe that there are parties that come and go, and there are other parties that are deeply inscribed in the consciousness of a people. And I believe – and I want and will fight for it – that SYRIZA not only has a past, but also a future.”
Taking a brief look back at SYRIZA’s past, he stands in 2019: “You will allow me to estimate that SYRIZA is not defeated in 2019. When you have been elected government with 36% and, having gone through fire and iron, the people send you to the seats of the official opposition with 32%, it is not a defeat. The message was clear and personal to Alexis Tsipras: ‘Change everything in the party and come again[…]The request from the people of SYRIZA remains the same: “Change everything”. And this is so loud that it doesn’t allow you to leave.”
He stands in the present moment saying, “At this critical juncture we are today. Is it the decline of SYRIZA? It is. Is it the end of SYRIZA? I’m convinced not, that’s why I’m here.
In order to succeed, SYRIZA must become a party and have a vision. The party brings governability. Vision brings electoral victory[…]The time has come to unite these two poles. But this requires tectonic changes in which only the progressive world itself can be the protagonist. “Take SYRIZA in your hands”. It’s not my motto. I found it as a legacy. A slogan that was never put into practice. The time has come. To become the most directly democratic party in Europe. Give power to the base. Let factions, bureaucracies, entanglements and factors fall before the river of the world.
The time has come to offer a new vision to Greek women and men. Because, as you will see in the debate of the PASOK presidential candidates, the light does not come from elsewhere”.
In closing, he argues: “The vision of a Modern Left will bring the society of the many against the economic oligarchy, which is defended by a corrupt government on the run. I cannot be absent from this battle. “As a general?”, is the journalistic question of the day. And those who ask, forget that the greatest honor is to be a soldier in a world that is fighting to make its life better.”
