“We are going, slowly but surely, towards the end of the 5th wave”, according to Yves Van Laethem

Cases are decreasing in all regions of the country

When he draws up the epidemiological report of the last seven days, the infectiologist affirms that over the last week, we have experienced an average of 13,931 new cases per day, which represents a “significant decrease of 44%. This decrease is of the same order of magnitude as that observed last week.”

What is also striking is that this decrease in cases is confirmed in all regions of the country and in all age groups, although it is more marked in children (-50%) compared to the last week.

Indeed, at regional level, the decrease is around -50% in Wallonia and Brussels, while in Flanders the decrease is less significant (-40%).

In terms of age groups, it should be added that “The decrease is a little steeper in children and adolescents aged 10 to 19, with a 50% decrease compared to last week. The majority of cases are currently found in people in their thirties, followed by people aged 10 to 19 and 20 to 29”pour suit Yves Van Laethem.

The endangered Delta variant

The interfederal spokesperson then analyzed the state of the variants in Belgium. It emerges that the Omicron variant type BA.1 is dominant, since it is present at 86%. The BA.2 variant only occupies 14% among new contaminations, but “its place is growing little by little”. According to estimates by the infectiologist, this variant might become dominant in the coming weeks, as is already the case elsewhere in Europe.

In contrast, “for the moment, the Delta variant is on the way out, since it only causes around 0.3% of new cases of coronavirus.”
