The problem: The batteries often end up in residual waste – according to the Board of Trustees for Road Safety (KFV), around three million batteries are disposed of incorrectly every year. This can have fatal consequences: “Not a week goes by without life-threatening explosions,” says Gabriele Jüly, managing director of the Association of Austrian Waste Management Companies (VOEB). Studies by the Montanuniversität Leoben show that the increasing number of lithium batteries in residual waste and fires in recycled batteries.

The desperation in the industry is enormous, says the head of the association. That’s why the VOEB addressed politicians in a press conference with the Federal Fire Brigade Association and the KFV on Thursday and appealed to introduce a deposit system on accumulators and batteries. “This is the only way to prevent fires in companies, increase the collection rate and conserve resources,” it was emphasized. The federal government is already under pressure to act because the EU stipulates that the collection rate for old batteries must be increased from the current 45 to 73 percent. This should also reduce the number of fires.
