“When I was in my twenties, alcohol served as an escape route” from pressure and fame, former England soccer team captain Wayne Rooney admitted in a podcast.
“I returned home, I spent several days locked up, without going out. “I drank almost until I passed out,” said the former English soccer prodigy, recently appointed coach of Birmingham, a club in the English second division.

Wayne Rooney, now 38 years old, entered the world of professional football at 16, when he debuted with Everton, and at 17 he was already international for England.
At 18 he signed for one of the greats of English football, Manchester United, where he became the top scorer in the club’s history.

“I didn’t want to surround myself with people, because sometimes you feel uncomfortable. “Sometimes I felt like I was letting people down and I didn’t know how to deal with the situation,” Rooney added in a podcast launched by Rob Burrow, a former rugby player and ALS patient.
“When you don’t accept help and advice from others, you can find yourself down and that’s what happened to me for a few years. Today, happily, I am no longer afraid to explain my problems to others,” concluded the former forward.
Now, following an adventure at DC United in the MLS, Rooney, whose first job as a coach was at Derby County, is back in England to try to save Birmingham City, in the Championship (English second division).
