What’s going on above the water? This is one of the best images ever of a waterspout, a type of tornado that occurs over water. Waterspouts are swirling columns of rising moist air that typically form over warm waters. Waterspouts can be as dangerous as tornadoes and wind speeds can exceed 200 km/h. Some waterspouts form away from thunderstorms and even in relatively mild weather. Waterspouts can be relatively transparent and initially only visible through the unusual pattern they create on the water. The featured image was taken in July 2013 near Tampa Bay, Florida. The Atlantic Ocean off Florida is arguably the most active area in the world for waterspouts, with hundreds forming each year.
