Water Supply Crisis in Havana: 200,000 Consumers Affected and Growing

The situation with the water supply in the capital of Cuba is becoming more and more complicated. At the close of this Monday, more than 200,000 consumers did not have access to the precious liquid. By the way, the Aguas de La Habana company forecasts new cuts for the coming days.

According to the local newspaper, Tribuna de La Habana, several aspects influence the current crisis. One of them is the number of breakdowns in the pumping equipment due to the electrical discharges of the most recent days. Another factor once morest it is the drop in water levels in surface reservoirs during the first half of June.

Just this month, electrical storms have caused 158 serious breaks in the water supply system in Havana. Of that total, 74 arose in the last week.

Response from Aguas de La Habana

Faced with such a scenario, the Aguas de La Habana company proposes several strategies to minimize service interruption time. The main variant is to recover the eight pumping equipment and set up water tanks in the communities where possible.

In the same way, experts monitor and offer maintenance to the infrastructure to try to reduce the damage caused by lightning. Meanwhile, the wells in each area are used to supply residential areas.

Aguas de La Habana also reported that in July the company will receive 12 new pumping machines. In this way, the water supply system in the capital should be stabilized.

The Ariguanabo system has been one of the most affected in recent weeks due to the impact of electrical discharges. Hence, the municipalities that suffer the supply crisis are Playa, Marianao and La Lisa.

Meanwhile, in the center of the capital the most impacted are Old Havana and Centro Habana. However, there have also been interruptions in areas of Plaza de la Revolución, Cerro and Diez de Octubre.
