The summer weather attracted the first bathers to Lake Neusiedl at the weekend. The water situation is good this spring, but the mild temperatures and strong winds mean that evaporation now takes place almost all year round, Harald Grabenhofer from Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park points out climate change in an APA interview. In order to adapt to this, it is important to keep the water in the region.
Wind and high temperatures cause the lake to lose water through heavy evaporation. This doesn’t just happen in the summer months: “Due to climate change, evaporation is increasing and even takes place in winter when there are no temperatures below zero,” explained Grabenhofer.
The findings of the past decades have shown that there are drier and wetter periods; currently the region is likely to be in a wetter one. However, climate change also suggests extreme weather events, Grabenhofer points out. Adaptation to climate change is necessary, he referred to the recently launched “LIFE Pannonic Salt” project to retain water and raise groundwater levels.
As far as Lake Neusiedl is concerned, it is currently at 115.41 meters above the Adriatic, which is a good 40 centimeters more than in 2023. It is 17 centimeters short of the long-term average. The situation for waterfowl is therefore much better than last year. “We are looking forward to a hopefully successful breeding season,” said Grabenhofer. From August onwards, the region will once more be a resting place for migrating waterfowl and what the situation will look like cannot of course be estimated yet.
The situation is currently different when it comes to paints. Zicksee and Oberer Stinkersee, for example, are well filled. The eastern part of the Lange Lacke also has water. However, this is not the case with the western part – a sign that the surface of the paint is no longer functioning well and that there is a need for action here.
