Tingling or still: The hikes to the Mönchsberg or to Hellbrunn are all regarding today’s Drinking Water Day.

The wet May didn’t leave the impression that water is a rare commodity. However, the reports that the groundwater levels are finally stable once more have made us think. As long as the water flows crystal clear and fresh from the tap, you don’t think too much regarding its origin. However, the expected dry periods will once more raise the question of reliable availability.

The Day of Drinking Water and Hydropower partly brings places that are only accessible today in front of the curtain. In addition, there are 19 permanent drinking water fountains in the old town alone. A suitable starting point for the water hike is the Leopoldskron outdoor pool. From there past the castle to the Almkanal and along this oldest water and energy supply system in Central Europe, then branching off to the left to the Festungsberg staircase. Past the Freyschlössl to the Museum Wasser:Spiegel, which is freely accessible today (10-17), which is connected to the 25,000 cubic meter high drinking water tank. Back towards the fortress and left down to the water wheel at the Stiftsmühle St. Peter, where the bakery trade has benefited from the Almwasserkraft for 700 years.

Across the old town to the Salzachkai, turn left there and continue to the hydropower snail (11-14), which is only open today, near the Rotkreuz car park. Also at the end of the hike there are real sources of power: the Almsnail (visit 11-14) next to the bicycle parking space and the guest garden in the Augustinerbräu. Another, slightly longer water hike leads to Hellbrunn in the south of the city. There, the water games have been delighting and refreshing visitors for 400 years – and until the end of October (daily 10 a.m. – 5.30 p.m.) the special exhibition “Water” in the monthly castle. The starting point is once more the “Lepi-Bad”. Then along the Almkanal upstream to the Nissenstraße, to the left across the south via the municipal cemetery to Morzg and via the Lasserhofweg to Hellbrunn. Return via Hellbrunner, Hofhaymer- and Fürstenallee. Additional power plants on the Alm Canal that are only accessible today: Klappacher and Deisl in Grödig (10-12) and Sinnhub opposite Leopoldskronstraße 14 (11-14).
