Water Damage at Séminaire de Québec: Restoration Efforts Underway

Firefighters from the Quebec Fire Protection Service responded Friday evening to significant water damage in the congregational wing of the Séminaire de Québec, a historic building on the Côte de la Fabrique.

The structural damage would be “significant”, according to the general director of the Séminaire de Québec, Denis Cantin. Discussions will also be held with the Quebec Ministry of Culture since the building is a heritage site.

“We already have a response from them,” says Mr. Cantin. This will continue from Monday.”

“We must understand that we will have to rebuild from the beginning,” he argues.

The water infiltrated into the premises of the School of Architecture of Laval University, located inside the historic building.

“The piping gave way between the ceiling” of the 3rd and 4th floors, explained Saturday to Journal the spokesperson for Laval University, Andrée-Anne Stewart. “The student workshop, located on the 3rd floor, received a large quantity of water on the floor, on the work tables and chairs.”

The water would then have crept down to the lower floors where the chapel, the guard post and the reception are located.

Inside the chapel, the large altar “was subject to special precautions” during the emergency intervention, notes Denis Cantin.

Ms. Stewart specifies that drying operations were still in progress on Saturday and that no particular material damage was noted.
