The Walloon Region’s drought unit met this Friday to take stock of the climate situation.
Water production and distribution are carried out normally, but a significant and widespread increase in consumption has been observed over the past seven days, which requires special attention from distributors. The filling of swimming pools, cisterns and potentially increased recreational use might explain this peak in consumption, notes the cell.
Moderate fire hazard
The groundwater levels recorded are in the same average range as the previous dry years, namely 2018 and 2020. Regarding the risk of forest fires, the alert level currently observed is moderate, mainly in the north of the province of Liège, the provinces of Namur and Luxembourg. However, the level should drop with the announced storms.
A drought index that should go up
The drought index is currently below normal due to the absence of precipitation for 30 days, but the trend might be slowed down by the arrival of sometimes stormy precipitation announced by the weather forecast for the next ten days, said Friday. the SPW drought unit following its meeting.
With regard to the dams-reservoirs, the situation is normal, despite very low inflows given the absence of precipitation, notes the cell. The decrease in flows in navigable waterways, caused by the lack of precipitation since May 15, continues, adds the Walloon cell. A similar trend is observed for most non-navigable watercourses. Certain sections, including part of the Ourthe downstream of Nisramont and a section of the Semois, are therefore closed to navigation for kayaks, the cell further notes. The bathing water situation is completely normal.
The expertise unit will meet once more on June 27 at 9 a.m. to take stock of the situation.
