The water bomber crashed in mid-operation this Monday, in Panguilemo, near Talca, in central Chile, while trying to put out a forest fire. The aircraft, a Thrush S-2R-T660, struck an electrical pylon during its approach maneuver to drop its water cargo. It caught fire instantly, veered off course and ended its course a few hundred meters further down the highway.

The Spanish pilot of the Air Andes plane, Fernando Solans, 58, was killed instantly. He “had a lot of experience”, declared his employer, relayed by TF1. Four people were injured on the ground during the accident, specifies Le Parisien. An investigation was opened to determine the circumstances of the tragedy and the possible share of responsibility of the Regional Operations Center which coordinated the intervention.

The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, sent his “deepest condolences” to the family and loved ones of the victim. His remains will be repatriated “as soon as possible”, he added.
