Water and Energy Rationing in Bogotá: Mayor Announces Measure

Water rationing in Bogotá is already a fact, due to the low level of the reservoirs that supply the capital’s residents with the precious liquid. Therefore, the Mayor’s Office, together with the Aqueduct Company, announced this Monday how and from when this measure will begin to take effect in the city.

According to the District, the rationing measure will go into effect next Thursday. Therefore, Bogotá will be divided into nine zones that, per day, will have supply restrictions for a period of 24 continuous hours from 8:00 am to 8:00 am the next day.

Now, in Vicky en Semana, the mayor of Bogotá, Carlos Fernando Galán, referred to the possibility that the city will also open up energy rationing.

“That is a critical issue too, it is not an issue we consider for the next few days, but we are close if measures are not taken (…) If we are in a critical situation, I am going to have a new meeting with the Energy Group of Bogotá, Enel, and with others, to evaluate what actions we can take in the short term to reduce the risk that we will also have to make restriction decisions in the medium term,” Galán responded, given the possibility of energy rationing in the city.

Mayor Galán was also emphatic in saying that they are decisions that do not end up being made from Bogotá, explaining that the energy system works differently from the issue of water.

“One supplies water at a regional level, in the area of the site, on the other hand, energy is supplied through transmission networks and one can bring energy from other areas of the country through these networks, the problem is that “Those have little capacity,” added the president of the capital.

Seconds before, Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán had explained in Vicky en Semana that Bogotá presents problems related to the energy transmission networks, given that they should have been renewed and expanded their capacity since previous years.

“To explain this a little to people. The city has transmission networks through which it brings energy to Bogotá that should have been renewed and expanded its capacity several years ago. Bogotá should have a significantly higher capacity to bring energy than it has today. These networks should have been in operation since 2018, six years ago and they are not for different reasons; issues of environmental licenses, issues of communities that do not want the towers to pass through there. Different things. But that has prevented these projects from moving forward. So today we have, consider transmission networks, bringing it to an example of highways: it is like a two-lane road, one in each direction, and we need a double carriageway,” Galán explained in Vicky en Semana.

Carlos Fernando Galán said that we must act in time to avoid a blackout in Bogotá.

In this sense, the mayor of Bogotá warned that the problem is in line with the transportation of that energy that might be brought from other areas of the country but that is not possible at this time, due to the capacity handled by the transmission networks. that the city has.

“We have to work there. Even in some areas of the metropolitan region there have been difficulties in guaranteeing energy service for new developments,” said Mayor Galán.

Therefore, Galán insisted that “it is possible” that energy rationing might occur in Bogotá but, to try to prevent this from happening, the District will sit down with all the relevant actors to see how the construction of the facilities is expedited. energy transmission networks, as mentioned above.

“Today they are full. At the moment the energy networks we have are at capacity; If it continues to grow the same and we do not expand the networks or we do not complete the expansion of these, we would have to make those types of decisions – energy rationing -,” the mayor of Bogotá said in Vicky en Semana.
