Dutch police in Amsterdam have found a passenger hiding in the front wheels of a cargo plane from South Africa, a spokeswoman announced Sunday.
The unidentified man is believed to have slipped into the wheel of the plane before it left Johannesburg, according to Royal Dutch Military Police spokeswoman Yoann Helmonds.
“The man was found alive in the front of the plane, and he was taken to a hospital in a stable condition,” she said.
Helmonds pointed out that the police opened an investigation into the accident. “It is amazing that the man is still alive,” she said.
The average flight time between Johannesburg and Amsterdam is regarding 11 hours.
Similar incidents on flights to the Netherlands are rare, according to a police spokeswoman, noting that previous attempts included migrants from Nigeria and Kenya.
Last year, border police discovered the body of a Nigerian man in the landing gear of a plane arriving at Schiphol airport.
