Around 3 a.m., RDS and RDS.ca will broadcast the 3rd round match between Félix Auger-Aliassime and Daniil Medvedev, live from Melbourne.

The first week is coming to an end at the Australian Open, and for Canada, only Félix Auger-Aliassime is still in the running on the singles side.

The Quebecer is trying to turn the page and put behind him a year 2023 which he described as “disappointing”.

So far, in this first major tournament on the calendar, it’s mission accomplished for Auger-Aliassime, who has scored two victories.

This is of course only a small sample.

Recovering from a knee injury which still bothered him at the beginning of the month, the 23-year-old tennis player defeated the Austrian Dominic Thiem – not without difficulty, following five rounds and 4 hours 59 minutes of play -, as well than the Frenchman Hugo Grenier in four sets.

Despite the fact that he conceded the second set to Grenier, “FAA” can encourage himself by saying that in the other three, he only dropped four games in total.

Medvedev au 3e tour

Auger-Aliassime will have a completely different type of opponent in front of him on Saturday, however: none other than Russian Daniil Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, who boasts an immaculate 6-0 record once morest him.

One of these defeats happened in Melbourne, in the quarter-finals of the 2022 edition, when Medvedev came back from two rounds behind to win.

Auger-Aliassime is seeded 27th in the Australian Grand Slam, while Medvedev is seeded third. He played the same number of rounds as his rival, notably having had to overcome a deficit of two sets to zero once morest the Finn Emil Ruusuvori, in the second round.

While Canada’s other four representatives in singles have been eliminated, there is still Gabriela Dabrowski, in both doubles and mixed doubles.
